Chuck Duer LPC-S
I have been in the mental health field for the past 30 years. I can be helpful to folks with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma and grief experiences, co-dependency issues, parenting difficulties, sexual concerns, and career challenges. I work to establish a place where people can disclose and pursue their most personal challenges openly and truthfully. I understand the complex nature of these experiences and can help individuals maintain jobs, relationships and activities. I have experience as a therapist and program coordinator in mental health and substance abuse programs in the Birmingham area and have worked with persons who come from a wide expanse of socioeconomic status, sexual orientations, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
I work with individuals and couples to promote hope, health, and wellness by creating a safe space conducive to facilitating change, reflection and interpersonal growth. My orientation is centrally interpersonal; attachment theory is important to my practice; but I'm careful to not over-emphasize the past. I utilize a variety of techniques from CBT, DBT, ACT, and MI. When working with couples I am oriented towards family systems and exploring the effects of relationship dynamics on emotion, thought and mood. I collaborate with other professionals when medication is appropriate.
